Tis the Season for the War on Christmas

Christmas Tree

It just wouldn’t be the holiday season without Bill O’Reilly and his contrived ‘War on Christmas,’ would it?

The Fox News pundit is back again to yabber on and on about our attempts to “diminish Christmas for secular progressive reasons.” Apparently, the city of Fort Collins, Colorado, and their decision to choose white lights over the “more Christmas-y” colored lights has really gotten Bill all riled up (a video of the segment posted on the blog Think Progress can be seen here).

Despite what O’Reilly would have you believe, we Humanists do respect Christmas, as we respect Hanukkah, Kwaanza, Eid, and other December holidays (we even have our own in HumanLight). Every religious and nonreligious holiday in the month of December celebrate similar themes: happiness, peace, love, joy. However you want to celebrate is up to you.

O’Reilly is the only one fighting in this so-called ‘war.’ For someone who cherishes this time of year so much, his hate-filled mongering is about as un-Christmas as you can get.

I don’t think it is wrong to want to have a holiday that celebrates the modern secular traditions of Christmas without believing in Christianity. While I appreciate holidays like HumanLight and the Solstice, they are not as close of an alternative to Christmas and the “magic” of Christmas and Santa Claus, etc, and the other traditions that are more societal than religious.

So I came up with the idea (although I wasn’t alone, there have been several people who have independently come up with the nearly identical idea) of celebrating Krismas instead of Christmas. Krismas is the secular celebration of the myth of Kris Kringle. I’m sure some fundamentalists will take this to be an attack on Christmas, but I see it as allowing them to have their religious holiday, and allowing the rest of us to have our secular holiday. We have a website now at http://www.krismas.org.

I’m not sure the “Krismas” idea can stay afloat due to the fact that it also celebrates the Catholic Saint Nicolas, a 4th century bishop. I think rather, secularist would be wise to celebrate something all together different from Christmas if they want to remove Jesus Christ. It seems illogical, that holiday that would not be without Jesus Christ, should be celebrated otherwise. So those who choose not to believe, could possibly celebrate the modern idea of “holidays.”

Maybe they could celebrate a holiday that puts someone like “Hitler” or “Nietzsche” as their replacement for Christ, since both of these men somewhat represent an idea of anti-Christ.

Christmas has seemed to stay afloat just fine despite being based on previous pagan holidays, I see no reason that Krismas couldn’t also, even if it is an “offshoot” of a Christian one. And you are making the assumption that Kris Kringle as celebrated in Krismas is “Saint Nicolas”, that would be as bad as me making the assumption that Jesus is Sol Invictus.

You also make the assumption that someone who doesn’t believe in the teachings (as generally taught these days) of Christianity would support someone who you believe to be the opposite of Jesus. Many Humanists follow loving their neighbor and loving their enemy, but they don’t follow these principles because Jesus taught them, they follow these principles because they make logical sense to those people.

I see no harm with anyones thoughts about Christmas.
And with O’Reilly, why-the Nun made him do it.
AD celebrates the birth of James the Lesser anyway SO
what is new with stupidity anyway!
